Greater Louisville Medical Society Committees

Membership in appointed committees remains open throughout the year. If you are interested in serving, email info@glms.org.
Unless otherwise noted, meetings are held at GLMS.

Board of Governors (elected and appointed)
Chief governing body of GLMS. Members of the board are elected or appointed as determined by the incoming president (At-Large) and the GLMS bylaws (ex-officio members). Meets five times annually – second Friday, 7:00 a.m. Click here for a list of current Board members.

Bioethics Committee
Studies general ethical issues of medical practice and provides conclusions to the Judicial Council. Judicial Council uses this information to judicate as necessary. Infrequently, this committee will pose an ethical dilemma for print in the Louisville Medicine. Meets quarterly – first Wednesday, 5:30 p.m.

Editorial Board
Reviews and approves content of monthly magazine, Louisville Medicine. Members are encouraged to write articles and opinion pieces. Meets every other month on the fourth Wednesday, 7 a.m.

Emerging Medical Concepts Committee
Examines the nature of change in physician practices and proposes action plans for GLMS. Meets monthly – third Tuesday, 7 a.m.

EMS/Diversion Council
Provides a forum to address concerns and seek resolution on hospital, EMS and diversion issues. Members include emergency room doctors and managers, hospital representatives, EMS agencies and the Kentucky Hospital Association. Meets quarterly – fourth Friday, 7 a.m.

Environmental Medicine and Workplace Health Committee
Meets to discuss the impact of environmental issues on the health of our population in the greater Louisville area. This group often receives letters from local organizations asking for GLMS endorsement of research studies or grant-funded environmental projects. Meets quarterly – fourth Tuesday, noon.

Insurance Issues Resolution Committees
Meets with the major carriers in Kentucky (Anthem, Humana, Medicare, Medicaid, UnitedHealthcare) to facilitate hassle reports, communicate trends identified by GLMS members and push for resolutions. Meets as needed.

Judicial Council
Reviews applications for membership. Mediates physician to physician disputes or related peer review cases for final disposition. Meets as needed

KMA Delegation
Develops GLMS resolutions for submission to the KMA. Resolutions approved at the KMA Annual Meeting become part of KMA policy and
its lobbying efforts at the state and federal level. Nominates GLMS
candidates for KMA and AMA offices. Meeting times vary. Group
meets three times during summer months preceding the KMA Annual
Meeting in September.

Nominating Committee
Recruits and recommends candidates for leadership. Meeting times vary, but typically meets two times per year between November and January.

Policy and Advocacy Team
In an effort to have a vigorous positive influence on the state legislative process, this pro-active group educates members on public policy and legislative issues that impact medicine while advocating for policy that advances patient’s safety, patient care and medical practice. The team coordinates efforts with other physician specialty groups and strives to collaborate with legislative decision makers to ensure that legislative and regulatory policies are based on sound, high quality, evidence-based practices. Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee
Identifies nationally recognized peer-developed performance measures appropriate for patient care and encourages GLMS members to apply them. Also, demands the application of these measures by payers instituting performance-based reimbursement models and seeks to inform the public about the importance of “true” quality measurements. Meets as needed.

Senior Physicians Committee
Senior physicians meet monthly on the second Thursday, 10:00 a.m. These meetings are open to all physicians. Each month a dynamic speaker is brought in to speak with a Q&A time to follow. To RSVP e-mail Donna Jones at donna.jones@glms.org

Wear the White Coat Task Force
Plans the annual Wear the White Coat program, identifies and invites community leaders to invite recruits table hosts and coordinates the orientation breakfast and debriefing dinner. Meets as needed.
