Nicaragua

The GLMS Foundation, with the support of Kosair Charities and Kosair Children’s Hospital, provides the opportunity for medical residents to join a group of more than a dozen medical volunteers to bring much needed medical care to Managua, Nicaragua. The annual trip is sponsored by the GLMS Foundation in partnership with Hand in Hand Ministries, a Louisville nonprofit that operates the Pathway to Change program for the poor in Nicaragua.

This trip comes as part of the Foundation’s Medical Missions Initiative. The week is packed with visits to hospitals and clinics with sharing of medical supplies and equipment. During this annual trip, our physicians also provide educational materials and instruction to Nicaraguan residents and medical staff.

Many local and close regional opportunities are also available if you would consider volunteering a few hours each month. Together we can provide much needed health care to the underserved in our communities! Please call the Foundation office at 502-589-2001 or email for more information.

Excerpts from Dr. John McCurdy's article upon his return from the 2015 Nicaragua Medical Immersion Trip:

“…. There is a personal reward to the work of aiding others in need, to be sure, else humans would not have selfless tendencies; that too, is not the point of such work. My anxieties on approaching this mission were grounded in the overwhelming task of helping to bring happiness and clarity to a chaotic place (emotionally and literally). What can I do? Can I really help? There was a simple answer that I found only through experience; that is, we do what we can. Whatever small bit of aid I can render may result in some small good, some small spark that will alight a positive change. The opportunity to offer some help, to give of ourselves, and work to bring something more, no matter how slender, to the lives of others in need has been a blessing. I happily anticipate my next opportunity to continue such work.”
